About Mexican Independence Day
Mexican Independence Day, celebrated on September 15th, commemorates Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1810. It marks the start of a decade-long struggle for freedom led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest.
On this day, Mexicans across the country gather to honour their heritage with vibrant parades, music, fireworks, and traditional cuisine. The “Grito de Dolores,” a reenactment of Hidalgo’s call to arms, is a central event, where the president shouts “Viva México!” from the National Palace in Mexico City. Mexican Independence Day symbolizes patriotism, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Mexican people.
